Educating Young People About a Career in Field Service

Although a career in field service remains a viable profession, its workforce continues to shrink. Careers in field service is rarely the first choice for many young people, which makes the work of recruiters even harder. This article discusses the strategies and techniques that recruiters and human resource departments can use to drive interest towards a career in field service. These approaches are a combination of educating young people about the industry and showcase the benefits of working in the field. Because young people have very limited knowledge about the industry, the interest level is often low. From a young age, many students are taught by parents and teachers about other professions and career options, and may neglect to mention field service. Use these tips and tricks to find ways to leverage the youth towards the field service industry and create more interest in its various professions.

How Can You Recruit More Young People to Become Field Service Workers?

It is difficult for human resource personnel to attract young people to become field service workers or technicians because many of them are unaware of what a career in this industry looks like. To better inform the youth about field service, companies should be proactive in promoting the profession. Consider attending career events at schools and within the community to educate young people about what field service workers do. Introduce a variety of staff, including dispatchers, controllers and field technicians themselves. Bringing in professionals from your company will not only helps to inform young people, but will add credibility to your business. This approach is particularly useful because their stories speak to the day-to-day routines, tasks and challenges of field service technicians. Rather than reading brochures and websites, hearing about people’s experiences will have a greater impact on the youth.

In addition to introducing a day in the life, you should make sure to highlight the benefits that come with being a field service worker. Compared to a number of professions, mention that field service is a relatively well-paying occupation and is an industry with tremendous growth opportunities. Also, talk about how a career in field service is ideal for individuals who are looking for a more hands-on job. Reiterate that there is plenty of learning on the job compared to other careers, and provides a solid foundation of knowledge that is learned through experience. Emphasizing these characteristics can help to both educate and motivate students who may be unsure about what career path to take.

After making an extra effort to educate and inform young people, make your construction company stands out by offering some additional incentives. One way to do this is by offering compensation for certification training or extra courses they may need. This helps to show potential employees that your company is committed to their success. In addition, offering to pay for certification and training also benefits your company and ensures that each member is fully certified and has the most up-to-date credentials. Investing the appropriate time and effort into your employees will also help to create a loyal and reliable workforce.

The recruitment process does not end once you have offered an individual the job. Ensuring that you create a fun and relaxed atmosphere during the initial training sessions is key in promoting both your company and the industry as a whole. Find ways to educate new staff in an engaging way, utilize the latest technologies, and incorporate hands-on training.

Further Considerations

Because of the lack of exposure young people have to the field service industry, there is little interest in the profession. Engaging with the youth in both a fun and educational way will bode well for the field service industry in the future. It is up to managers, owners and human resource personnel to take extra steps in promoting the industry and exposing it to people at a young age. Not only will a greater interest in field service benefit the industry, being a leader and spokesperson will also work to add credibility and authority to your business.  Click the link for more articles on human resources in the construction industry.
